November 5, 2016: Fall Hike

Join us for an 8½ mile hike into one of the most diverse scenic areas of central Shenandoah National Park. From the trailhead parking area on Rte. 211 (just over 4 miles west of Sperryville, VA), we will ascend the Pass Mountain trail for a forest walk along the ridge. We will pass the Pass Mountain shelter and soon after turn unnamed-2north on the Appalachian Trail. After reaching the summit of the mountain, we will descend ½ mile to the Double Rocks overlook with expansive views west of the Luray Valley, New Market Gap, and the Massanutten Range, with Strickler Knob and Kennedy Peak visible on a clear day. We will then descend back to the trailhead.

This trip will cover approximately 1750 vertical feet and take about 5 hours, including lunch, breaks, and stops to admire the views. This is considered a moderate mountain hike. We will meet at 10AM sharp at the trailhead on Rte. 211.

Clouds and sprinkles will not deter us. In case of heavy rain, we will postpone. If time allows, after the hike, those interested will stop in at a vineyard and/or local inn for dinner.

November 6, 2016: Dr. Strange with Penn GALA

Join the Penn Club and PennGALA for an afternoon of movie fun with DOCTOR STRANGE. One of the year’s most highly anticipated releases, the movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch as a neurosurgeon who discovers he has secret powers after he loses his hands in a tragic car accident.

After the movie, there will be drinks and discussion led by Washington Blade movie critic Brian T. Carney (CAS/WH ’84).

Date and Time: 1:00 PM

Location: Regal Majestic in downtown Silver Spring (IMAX 3D). Metro Red Line or free parking at the Wayne Avenue parking garage.

November 16, 2016: An Evening with Billy Shore

Bill Shore is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Share Our Strength, a national nonprofit that is ending childhood hunger in America through the No Kid Hungry campaign. On November 16th he will speak to Penn Alumni about his experience founding the organization and the groundbreaking work the organization is currently doing. The event will consist of a 30-minute talk followed by a 30-minute Q&A, while the ticket cost will cover some light appetizers and a donation to Share Our Strength.

May 7th: Virginia Gold Cup 

The Penn Club of DC is co-hosting one of the largesttop11 inter-alumni social events in the Mid-Atlantic at the Virginia Gold Cup. Included in the ticket price is round-trip transportation, full open bar (including premium liquor and beer), multiple full buffet menus, a Best Dressed Contest, and a Best Hat Contest.

May 7th: Hike in Shenandoah 

410Join alumnus Jerry Donahoe for a 9-mile hike into one of the most beautiful areas of Shenandoah National Park. The first half of our circuit hike starts at the trailhead on Rte. 211 where we take the Buck Ridge trail up to Skyline Drive where we cross the road and ascend on the Meadow Spring trail, past an old homestead, to join the Appalachian Trail and onward to Mary’s Rock Lookout trail to Mary’s Rock Vista. The vista provides an unparalleled 360-degree view of the Shenandoah and Massanutten Mountains. Our descent on the Buck Hollow trail leads us across the Buck Hollow stream and brings us back to the trailhead on Rte. 211.

This trip will cover approximately 2600 vertical feet and take about 6 hours, including lunch, breaks, and stops to admire the views. This is considered a moderate mountain hike. We will meet at 10AM sharp at the trailhead on Rte. 211 (for directions, see link below). Allow ample time to arrive; according to Google, it takes about one hour forty minutes from Downtown DC without traffic.

Bring plenty of water, pack a lunch, dress in layers and wear appropriate footwear. Clouds and sprinkles will not deter us. In case of heavy rain, we will postpone. If time allows, after the hike, those interested will stop in at a vineyard and/or local inn for dinner.
