May 7th: Hike in Shenandoah

410Join alumnus Jerry Donahoe for a 9-mile hike into one of the most beautiful areas of Shenandoah National Park. The first half of our circuit hike starts at the trailhead on Rte. 211 where we take the Buck Ridge trail up to Skyline Drive where we cross the road and ascend on the Meadow Spring trail, past an old homestead, to join the Appalachian Trail and onward to Mary’s Rock Lookout trail to Mary’s Rock Vista. The vista provides an unparalleled 360-degree view of the Shenandoah and Massanutten Mountains. Our descent on the Buck Hollow trail leads us across the Buck Hollow stream and brings us back to the trailhead on Rte. 211.

This trip will cover approximately 2600 vertical feet and take about 6 hours, including lunch, breaks, and stops to admire the views. This is considered a moderate mountain hike. We will meet at 10AM sharp at the trailhead on Rte. 211 (for directions, see link below). Allow ample time to arrive; according to Google, it takes about one hour forty minutes from Downtown DC without traffic.

Bring plenty of water, pack a lunch, dress in layers and wear appropriate footwear. Clouds and sprinkles will not deter us. In case of heavy rain, we will postpone. If time allows, after the hike, those interested will stop in at a vineyard and/or local inn for dinner.

To RSVP and for more information, please email Jerry Donahoe at maineescape@aol.com. Please provide your name, address, cell phone number, and preferred email address in your message so we can communicate/ coordinate prior to the hike!
